Exhibited in 2019 at Hangar Arts and Frames Whangarei. This massive diptych shows the confrontation between two worlds: that of navigator James Cook (shown not only with a shrunken moko mokai in hand, but his own skull prophetically rendered as shrunken and attacked); a mother with sick child on lap- as symbol of what Europeanisation could bring, but also eliciting sympathy for a giving, universal Motther; and a begging Byzantine priest. These are set off against a challenging Maori warrior (his carving can be seen as an ure, as can Cook’s sword), a Tahitian priest painted by Tupaea- the other navigator on boat The Endeavour in 1769. tHis massive work is a symbolic meeting between two cultures- not always happily, but redolent of epochal change.
